Harriot College Alumni Profile: Douglas Schiller

ECU 2023 “40 Under Forty” Leadership Recipient

Dr. Douglas Alexander Schiller (B.S. Biology ’06; M.A. Public Health ’08; and Critical Care Fellowship ’18), who resides in Winterville, NC, is one of ECU’s 2023 “40 Under Forty” Leadership Awardees and a Harriot College alumnus.

“[I am] honored to be nominated and awarded,” Schiller said. “Everyone in the field is very accomplished and very good company to be in.”

Schiller’s #HarriotCollegeMajor is helping him #MakeAMajorDifference in the lives of students and the public. He serves as a clinical assistant professor for ECU Brody School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine; and as medical director of the ECU Health Medical Center’s Cardiac ICU, Emergency Response Team, the VenoVenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. In addition to these roles, Shiller oversees and helps provide direction to multiple teams throughout the hospital.

Schiller said the part of his career he enjoys the most is “developing and utilizing metrics to help drive improvement within the units and teams we work with.”

While at ECU, Schiller said ECU offered invaluable training throughout his education, prior to and after medical school.

“I was well prepared and excelled in medical school and similarly the graduate medical education from ECU has prepared me well for my career,” he said.

When not working, or spending time with his kids, Schiller said he enjoys woodworking and automobile repair.
