Dr. Reide Corbett was appointed interim dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences in July 2026. Born and raised on the North Carolina coast, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry and chemical oceanography, respectively, and a Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from Florida State University. After beginning his academic career at Tulane University in New Orleans, he returned to North Carolina to join the faculty at East Carolina University.

Corbett is a professor in the Department of Earth, Environment and Planning. During his career at ECU, he has held several academic and administrative leadership roles, including dean of Integrated Coastal Programs and executive director of the Coastal Studies Institute.

A coastal oceanographer and geochemist, Corbett studies the dynamic interface between land and sea. His research focuses on coastal change, sediment dynamics, shoreline processes, and the geochemical and geomorphic evolution of coastal systems. His work has taken him from North Carolina and Puerto Rico to New Zealand and Antarctica, examining how storms, sea-level rise, sediment movement, groundwater discharge, human activity, and long-term geologic processes shape coastal environments.  Through much of this work, he seeks to help communities better understand coastal change, evaluate environmental hazards, and consider the choices required to adapt to a changing coastal future.
